Community Foundation's LUCAS Initiative Continues to Prove It's Worth and Impact

The Gardner Fire Department saves a second life using the LUCAS 3 device, donated by the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts as part of the LUCAS Initiative

 

 

On November 9, 2018 Gardner Fire Department personnel responded to a cardiac arrest call on Route 2 East for a 77-year old male. Upon arrival, rescue personnel confirmed the patient’s status and immediately deployed the department’s LUCAS® 3 device. Fire personnel were able to revive the patient and use of the device allowed CPR to be continued without interruption during preparation for transport and the transport time to Henry Heywood Hospital Emergency Room.

The patient was traveling with a relative on Route 2 East at the time of the incident. He was hospitalized briefly and was released. Asked how use of the device was a benefit to the department, Gardner Fire Chief Richard Ares stated, “LUCAS continued compression during the long transport from Route 2 and in the E.R.” Having the capacity to provide consistent and constant compressions prevents interruptions during transport activity and allows rescue personnel to deliver other medical treatment and reduce pre-transport activities.

This was the second life saved by Gardner Fire Department since the department was donated the device in March of 2018 by the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts as part of the CFNCM LUCAS Initiative. 

The cost of a LUCAS® 3 device is often price prohibitive for local fire departments. This initiative was able to put 15 devices into the North Central Massachusetts area. The benefits of these devices was recognized by Nashoba Valley Health Care Fund (NVHCF) Advisory Committee. This fund, established to support the general purposes of community health care in the Nashoba Region with areas of focus in health education of the general public, hospice care, home health care and long-term care services. Impact reports from departments who had applied for, and were granted to buy the device, in the recent past, the Advisory Committee decided chose to purchase and donate devices to all eligible fire-departments in the service territory who did not already have one. On March 3, 2018 the Fund awarded 5 devices to area communities. These donations were made in conjunction with an initiative of CFNCM that awarded ten devices to qualified communities in CFNCM service area.  

These two initiatives confirm that there is no price that can be put on a person’s life and a testament to CFNCM mission to strengthen and improve the communities of North Central Massachusetts.
