Delivering Comfort to Frontline Workers at Heywood Hospital

Staff members at Heywood Hospital in Gardner were recently treated to freshly cooked meals as a thank you for all they are doing during the COVID-19 crisis by the Estelle R. Ford Future Nurses Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts.

The fund made a gift of 137 dinners to all nurses, doctors, and other staff members working the afternoon shift at Heywood Hospital this past Wednesday afternoon. The meals were cooked and delivered by Suzette's Breakfast & Lunch Shoppe, a longtime Gardner restaurant that has been unable to operate due to COVID-19 social distancing regulations.

The Estelle R. Ford Future Nurses Scholarship Fund was created in 2016 to honor Estelle R. Ford, a 1943 graduate of the Heywood Hospital School of Nursing who worked as a nurse at Heywood Hospital as well as the Gardner Public schools. Estelle’s daughter Marjorie Fischer, who co-chairs the fund, notes that the gift is great way to honor her mother’s memory while making an impact in the local community.

“If my mom were still alive today she would be out in the front lines during this crisis as much as she could be,” says Fischer. “My mom was all about community and would have wanted us to support local businesses and the hospitals as much as possible.”

Linda Mack, Vice President for Philanthropy at the Community Foundation states, “We were honored to work with Marjorie to distribute this creative gift that acknowledges frontline hospital staff and helps a local business during this crisis.”
